New Planets in Pictures

What better way to inform people about newly discovered planets then show them? Astrobiologist Abel Mendez at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo is developing a new imaging software to depict how planets such as Kepler-22b may look — including features such as oceans, land masses, and atmospheres.

To date, images from 16 of 48 new planets discovered by Kepler space telescope and ground telescopes have already been rendered. Take a look at these planetary visions created by the Scientific Exoplanets Renderer (SER) to see what scientists “see”.
